Who is eligible to attend Arizona Virtual Academy?
AZVA offers enrollment for Arizona residents in grades K–12. To enroll, students must be 5 years old by September 1 of the upcoming school year. While attending AZVA, students must maintain a full-time Arizona residency.
How many of my children can I enroll in AZVA?
Because AZVA provides the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple children in the program.
What does it cost to attend AZVA?
Because AZVA is a public school, there is no tuition. We provide Arizona-certified teachers and instructional materials. Families are responsible for providing some common household materials (such as printer ink and paper). Our enrollment consultants can help address your technological and computer questions and needs.
Is Arizona Virtual Academy accredited? Is the curriculum aligned with state educational standards?
Yes, Arizona Virtual Academy is fully accredited and uses the K12 curriculum, which meets state education standards. AZVA ensures your child receives a high-quality education recognized across Arizona, preparing them for future academic success or to confidently move on to college or their chosen career.
Can I transfer my student in the middle of the school year? How do I transfer my student in the middle of the school year?
Yes, we do accept transfer students throughout the year. Simply follow the steps on our How to Enroll page to transfer your student to our online public school mid-year. AZVA is here to help families make a smooth transition when it works best for them.
If I transfer my student, can AZVA get my child’s records from their old school?
Arizona Virtual Academy cannot get your child’s records from their old school. That request must come from the parent or legal guardian of students under the age of 18. You may want to consider getting copies for yourself before changing schools. Our enrollment consultants are available to help with other questions about enrolling at Arizona Virtual Academy.
We’ve already had to switch schools this year. Is it better to transfer to Arizona Virtual Academy now or wait until the new school year?
You can enroll your student at AZVA whenever it works best for your family. Our enrollment consultants can help make it easier for you to transfer in the middle of the school year. And rest assured—after 20 years here in Arizona, getting to know our local families and communities, we’re not going anywhere—we’ll also be here next year if that works better for you!
Can my child enroll in AZVA and another public school?
No, the state of Arizona does not allow for dual enrollment in more than one full-time public school. Arizona Virtual Academy is a full-time, online public school choice with a comprehensive academic program.
Does AZVA accept students who have been expelled from another Arizona public school?
Each student who has been expelled from an Arizona public school and submits an enrollment application will be considered on an individual basis. According to statute, AZVA is a public school and is not required to accept students who have been expelled from another Arizona public school. Parents are responsible for informing our enrollment team if their student has been expelled upon initial submission of their enrollment application.
Is Arizona Virtual Academy available to children without a permanent address?
The McKinney Act of 1987, or P.L. 100-77, ensures that each child of a homeless individual, and each homeless youth shall have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education as provided to other children and youth. The act has been amended and is considered the McKinney-Vento Act currently. Under the Act, schools are prohibited from delaying a homeless child’s entry into school due to delays in obtaining school records. Rules regarding guardianship must be waived for homeless students living with foster parents or relatives other than their legal guardians. Individuals who are considered McKinney-Vento students are in housing temporarily, and due to hardship, their housing is substandard or considered inadequate, or a student is not living with a parent or guardian.
AZVA can offer school supplies and Title I services to qualifying youth experiencing homelessness. Qualifying students are determined on a case-by-case basis. If you feel your child may be eligible for services or would like to review the AZVA Admission of Homeless Children and Youth policy, please call our school office at 602.476.1320.
What is the attendance policy at AZVA?
As Arizona public school students, all Arizona Virtual Academy students must comply with the state-required minimum number of 180 instructional days. Also, a minimum number of instruction hours per grade level are required. Contact our office for specific grade-by-grade attendance requirements. Students may log instructional time anytime during the day and on any day of the week or weekend. It is important for students to log attendance daily.
Does AZVA offer kindergarten for my four-year-old?
No, Arizona Virtual Academy does not offer a kindergarten program for four-year-old students. Children must be aged five on or before September 1 of the upcoming school year to enroll.
Does AZVA offer full- or half-time kindergarten?
Arizona Virtual Academy offers half-time kindergarten. Kindergarten students will study language arts, math, and history.
How do I enroll my student?
Start by creating an account in the K12 enrollment portal or logging in to your existing account and completing the AZVA online enrollment form. Please be prepared to provide copies of documents within 30 days, such as:
- Proof of residence (e.g., a driver’s license or state ID, tax record, utility bill, etc.)
- Proof of age (e.g., a birth certificate or other reliable proof of the pupil’s identity and age)
For a list of specific documents, contact our enrollment consultants at 866.339.4946. You can also view the “Four Simple Steps to Enroll” for a step-by-step tutorial.
How will I know when my student’s enrollment has been approved?
Our enrollment processing center will contact you and inform you that your enrollment has been approved or that documents are still needed to process your application. Once your enrollment has been approved, an Arizona Virtual Academy representative will call you to discuss enrollment in AZVA’s program and course placement.
Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Our AZVA school calendar includes school holidays and vacation time. However, families may work with AZVA teachers and administration to swap vacation days based on family preferences with no penalty or unexcused absences. Parents can apply for an “educational leave of absence” during the school year. Requests must be submitted to the head of school 10 days before the absence. Leave will be approved based on the individual student’s consistent progress and attendance. No educational leave will be granted during scheduled state-mandated testing.
